Lesson Plan

Start: About the standard:

-         Describe the physical appearance and processes of the Earth

-         Specifically layers

1)      Earth’s formation:

-         Early on ~4.6 Ga. Earth was homogeneous

-         Separated, heavier material to the center

-         Formed layers we see today

2)      Earth’s Layers:

A)  Crust

                                    -  Extremely thin compared to the rest of the earth (not to scale)

                                    -  includes the rock under oceans and continents

                        B)  Mantle

                                    - Made of solid rock

                                    - Able to flow, seen over long time spans (Asphalt)

                                    - Due to convection, drives plate movement

                        C) Outer Core

                                    - Liquid Metal

                                    - Extremely hot, pressured

                                    - Flows...hypothesized to cause magnetic field

                        D) Inner Core

                                    - Immense pressure, solid metal

                                    - 3,000,000 times more pressure than you feel!

            End: Summary

-         Important things to remember:

1)      Earth formed 4.6 Ga.

2)      Heaviest materials towards the center

3)      4 major layers
