Write 1: Conceptual Interview Results

Please bring a blank audiotape to class on the day you will be conducting your interviews, and a voice recorder of your own if you wish

This writing assignment asks you to analyze the results from your second peer teaching activity, which involved interviewing a colleague about their understanding of a scientific concept.

Please prepare your paper using the following format:

1. In an opening paragraph, describe in prose form what concept(s) you explored in your interview. Indicate also what misconceptions you anticipated that your interview subject might hold, and why.

2. List the questions that you used in your interview.  If you used props or other materials, describe what they were and how they were used.

3. Summarize the results of your interview in 2-3 paragraphs. What conceptions were revealed? Were they what you expected? Your analysis is likely to include several claims about your subject's understanding. Select one of those claims to explore in #4 below.

4. Include a verbatim transcript of at least one minute of the tape recording. Assign your interview subject a pseudonym (I use "John" below) and use a format like the following:

Interviewer: Here is a model of the cell that I made with jello. What do you think of it?
John: It looks delicious!
Interviewer
: Could you talk to me a little about ...

Now write a paragraph or two describing how the transcript provides evidence for your claim.

5. Finally, if you were to do the interview again, what changes would you make?

Type up your analysis single-spaced and save it in Word format. Use the filename "SCIED411 Write1 lastname.doc" Then have someone whose judgment you trust carefully proofread the paper and give you feedback on the technical side of your writing. Make revisions.

Please submit your paper by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday September 29 in the course Angel dropbox labelled "write1."
